History

MIGA has supported the medical profession for over 120 years.

It traces its origins to a small meeting of 20 doctors on 21 December 1899 who formed an association called the Medical Defence Association of South Australia.

Today MIGA is a very different organisation

While our service ethos and focus on the healthcare sector have not changed, the structure and breadth of our business activities is very different to the MDASA of more than 120 years ago. Our organisation comprises:
MDASA Limited
Formed in 1899, MDASA Limited is a doctor owned, mutual non-profit organisation which provides a range of membership services and benefits to doctors and medical students across Australia.
 
Medical Insurance Australia Pty Ltd
Medical Insurance Australia Pty Ltd (Medical Insurance Australia) is a wholly owned subsidiary of MDASA. It is a licensed general insurer (regulated by the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority) and it provides the insurance policies that protect our clients.
Our loyal and growing client base is serviced by offices in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney.  Our insurance products protect not only doctors but also medical students, midwives, medical practices and healthcare organisations.
 

Representing your interests

MIGA is an active participant in the wider medical indemnity insurance industry, contributing to discussion and advocacy on behalf of our clients.  We value our strong industry relationships and the role we can play in supporting change and representing our client’s interests as the health care sector and the way in which care is delivered continues to evolve.
