Risk Management Program

Diverse & interesting activities that help reduce your day to day risk

At MIGA we know risk management is an important and effective tool that helps minimise the likelihood of claims and complaints.

Our Risk Management Program was the first of its kind introduced in Australia, and we remain passionate about delivering you industry leading education.  Over 5,000 of your colleagues are already participating in the Program!

Through a variety of exciting activities and resources, you can expand your knowledge and increase your awareness of risks, while at the same time earning CPD points and a 10% discount* on your insurance premium.

In July 2018 we launched Risk Education Online (REO), our new online learning platform. REO provides even more options for members to complete risk management activities in a richly interactive learning environment, with new on-line learning modules.  It also incorporates assessment, benchmarking and achievement records to help doctors manage and get the most out of their learning experience.

Why participate in the Risk Management Program?

It's flexible

No activities are compulsory, and most are free to clients. Choose from Conferences, Workshops, Practice Reviews, Modules, a Doctor’s Health Assessment and more.

It's simple

The Program is simple to complete: either complete one 10 Point activity, or combine any two 5 Point activities.  You can participate in a way that suits you on any device, at your own pace.

It's valuable

The Program provides focussed medico-legal education with practical tools to improve patient safety, the ability to earn CPD points and access a 10% premium discount on completion (terms & conditions)

How to complete the Program

The Program runs from 1 April to 31 March the following year.

Either complete one 10 Point activity, or combine any two 5 Point activities – achieve 10 Points and you’ll be entitled to a 10% premium discount the following year!  If you are currently an MIGA member you can log into REO now.

See terms and conditions here.

Program Activities for Doctors

  • Conferences - 10 Points

MIGA Conferences and online Workshops can be accessed via REO.
  • Workshops – 5 Points each

MIGA Workshops are based on our claims experience and provide an interactive forum for discussing clinical and professional risk issues and preventative strategies. Case examples, practical exercises and risk management tips are provided.

Attending 2 Workshops is a great way to complete the Program.

For further information simply log in to REO and select Risk Management Program and then Events.  From here you can book into your preferred Workshop(s).
  • Workshop & Action Plan – 10 Points

Using the information you learned from an MIGA Workshop, identify gaps in your practise and commit to making some changes by developing and submitting an Action Plan.

Improvements must be linked to the topic covered in the Workshop and be a step towards reducing your medico-legal risk. An Action Plan can only be completed once a Workshop has been attended.

For more information, log into REO or view the Action Plan Guidelines.
  • Practice Review – 5 Points

    MIGA Practice Review
This is a two-stage activity to evaluate your current practise through a process of self-assessment and making an improvement. Improvements must be a step towards reducing your medico-legal risk.

In stage 1, complete a Self-Assessment using one of the tools in REO.

In stage 2, identify an area for improvement based on your Self-Assessment result.  Submit an Action Plan for approval by MIGA.  For more information log into REO or view the Action Plan Guidelines.

    Ophthalmology Clinical Practice Review
This is a three-stage activity for Ophthalmologists, where you can undertake a records audit, attend a peer group session to discuss the results, and make an improvement to your practise. Improvements must be a step towards reducing your medico-legal risk.

In stage 1, complete the MIGA Audit tool online.

For stage 2, attend one of the MIGA Ophthalmology seminars to discuss the results, compare your results with the wider membership and discuss some relevant case studies. You can only register for the Seminar once you have submitted your Audit.

In stage 3, identify an area for improvement based on your audit results or the Seminar discussion. To claim Points simply have your Action Plan approved by MIGA.

Completing the clinical audit, attending the Seminar and implementing practice changes also entitles Fellows to claim 30 RANZCO CPD Category 1, Level 2 points.
  • Modules – 5 Points each

MIGA offers self-directed and self-paced learning options through interactive online Modules. Each involves a combination of learning materials, case studies, videos, resources and short quizzes.

Completing modules is a great way to earn 10 Points and complete the Program.
  • Doctor’s Health Assessment – 5 Points

MIGA recognises that doctors’ health is an important issue for the medical profession.  There is clear evidence that a significant proportion of doctors don’t have their own GP. Barriers such as embarrassment, fear of notification and confidentiality are contributing to self-investigation and self-treatment.

The adage "Healthy doctor - healthy patient" is so important, not only in delivering good treatment outcomes for your patients but also in reducing the likelihood of complaints and claims.

Doctors can claim Points for having a comprehensive health assessment with a GP, based on the Guidelines prepared by Doctors’ Health SA, regardless of where they practise. For further information see the Doctor’s Health Assessment page. You will be able to submit your certificate via REO.
  • Accredited Activities – 5 Points

MIGA accredits workshops and seminars offered by professional associations – such as Medical Colleges or professional education organisations. Accredited Activities must be focussed on medico-legal or clinical risk management and be comparable to an MIGA Workshop with regard to focus, intensity, duration, interaction and resource materials.

Unfortunately MIGA cannot accept applications directly from attendees. If you are attending education provided by a professional association, encourage the organisers to seek accreditation from us before the event.  For a complete list of Accredited Activities log into REO.
