History

MIGA has supported the medical profession for over 100 years and traces its origins to a small meeting of the medical profession on 21 December 1899. It was proposed at that meeting that an association be formed to be called the Medical Defence Association of South Australia.

The proposal was carried and the 20 doctors present at that first meeting were elected as the inaugural members of the association.

MIGA today

Today MIGA is a very different organisation.  While our service ethos and focus on the healthcare sector has not changed, the structure and breadth of our business activities is very different to the MDASA of 100 years ago.

We have a loyal and growing client base nationally serviced by offices in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney.  To effectively deal with the needs of health care professionals our business structure has developed over the years to incorporate an excellent blend of insurance, financial, legal and medical expertise.

Our insurance products now extend to protecting not only doctors but also medical students, midwives, medical practices and healthcare organisations.

Supporting a changing landscape

In 2010, after a rigorous tender process, MIGA was awarded the contract to be the sole provider of insurance under the Federal Government supported Midwives Insurance Scheme.  MIGA is proud to have been selected and we believe this is a strong endorsement by the Federal Government of MIGA's expertise and capabilities.

MIGA plays an active and vital role in the wider medical indemnity insurance industry having contributed to recent medical indemnity reforms and other initiatives.  We value our strong industry relationships and the role we can play in supporting change as the health care sector and the way in which care is delivered continue to evolve.
