Elective Grants

MIGA Elective Grants Program

"Supporting Medical Students in Developing Communities"

A major benefit of being a Student Member with MIGA is the opportunity it gives you to apply for an Elective Grant.

The Elective Grants Program began in 2004 with the aim of providing financial support for Medical Students pursuing an elective in a developing community.

The Elective Grants Program provides funding for a number of Medical Students to pursue an elective program in an area of personal interest and/or relevance to their medical studies.

Thank you to all students who submitted an Application for the 2010 Program.  Applications have now closed.

Information detailing the 2011 Elective Grants Program will be available from our website in early May 2011.

The Grants

MIGA offers up to five Grants of $3,500, each consisting of:

  • For Medical Students
    • An Elective Grant of $2,000 to assist in funding the Medical Student's elective, including the cost of travel, accommodation and vaccinations
  • For Developing Communities
    • A Medical Support Grant of $1,500.  This is in addition to the Elective Grant and is to assist in the purchase of medical or other aid for the community you visit as part of your elective.

Am I eligible?

The Elective Grants Program is open to current medical students in Australia who:

  • Wish to undertake an elective program in a developing community (including developing communities within Australia) and or country
  • Are current Student Members of MIGA.

The 2011 Elective Grants Program is open to students undertaking their elective between March 2011 and February 2012.

Student Membership of MIGA is free and joining is easy - simply complete our online Application Form.

Check back to our website in early May, when full details for the 2011 Program, including a brochure and Application Form, will be available.

How do I apply?

If you wish to apply for an Elective Grant (including a Medical Support Grant) you must:

  • Complete the Elective Grants Program Application Form available from our website in early May each Program year
  • Prepare your Proposal, a key component of your application that allows you to communicate what's different about you and your elective
  • Submit your Proposal with the completed Application Form in hard copy to MIGA by the close date.

Key dates to remember

Each year Applications are open from May to August, with Grants awarded during October.
